The Circle Charleston

About

The Circle Charleston is an independent homes and habitat journal for coastal South Carolina. It covers houses, habitat, and the wildlife that moves between them: what lives in, under, and around Charleston houses.

The issues read attics against the state’s exclusion calendar, gable vents against the fall roosting season, and crawl spaces against the coastal humidity. A recurring question runs through all of it — how an older house and the animals around it can share a roofline, a vent network, and a crawl space without the arrangement turning into damage. Coverage follows the Lowcountry’s building types: raised houses on piers, timber frames with louvered gable vents, additions joined to original rooflines, and the crawl spaces that make up so much of what never gets photographed.

The journal is written in the manner of a trade journal rather than a personal letter. Issues are numbered, dated, and kept in the archive, and each one is meant to stand on its own. An issue appears every other Tuesday.

The Circle began as a founders’ networking circle in Charleston; it is today an independent journal about the houses and creatures of the Lowcountry.
